In addition to the regular sailing trips for private persons and companies, the 'Oosterschelde' also provides accommodation for other groups, such as young people, persons claiming a disability benefit and people who have been ill for a considerable period of time. With the assistance of professional coaching on board a programme that is geared for that particular group will be carried out.

SOCIAL PROJECTS

CARE PATHS In 1999 a trip was organized for youngsters from various youth support agencies from Rotterdam to Rio de Janeiro, the ‘Villa Lobos’ project. The purpose of this trip was to offer the young people a new prospect of a better future by working on board and by following an individual study programme. After the voyage, which lasted almost eight weeks, the youngsters, upon their return to Holland, have been coached during their work and/or study. The results of this project led to another project in 2001: ‘Hora di Bai’. This project, starting from Cadiz (Spain) to the Cape Verde Islands and Rotterdam as the final destination, was specifically meant as a preliminary course to become a seaman. On board these young people learned the basics of sailing, complemented with study and tests. In 2002 we had another youth project: 'Villa Lobos-II' from Rotterdam to Rio de Janeiro.
For these youngsters life at sea can be a real challenge; besides assisting actively during the watches under the guidance of the professional crew, they discover a lot about themselves and others in a completely new way. The introduction to new, unknown countries and cultures broadens their horizon - in short enough elements and experiences for a completely new starting-point in the Netherlands.

TRAINING COURSES Sailing ship ‘Oosterschelde’ also offers excellent possibilities for the training of personnel and management of companies and organizations. Teambuilding, communication or management courses can be a part of this training. Training courses at sea offer the participants the unique experience of actively participating in sailing as well as having the possibility to take part in groups. The isolated situation provides a dynamic group experience with possibly unknown results. The programme can be developed before the voyage, in cooperation with our coaches.

SPECIAL GROUPS Sea voyages of ‘Oosterschelde’ are particularly suitable for groups such as persons claiming a disability benefit, who are motivated to return to the labour market and persons who have been unemployed for reasons of stress, strain and tiredness. The sea has a wholesome effect and with the help of professional coaching, constructive plans can be made for the future. As well as actively participating during watches, the obstacle preventing re-entry to the labour market can be approached purposefully. The coaches of ‘Oosterschelde’ in cooperation with the client can help with the making of a customized programme.
